I initially install SQL Server 2012 Express and recently upgraded to SQL Server 2012 Standard edition.
Now I need to upgrade SSMS since the Express edition does not have the Database Engine Tuning Advisor.
I tried different options in setup of Standard edition, but nothing helped, I am still missing Database Engine Tuning Advisor.

I am using locally the MS SQL Server Management Studio 2012 with SQL server 2012 database engine.
I have the following question:
Can I upgrade ONLY the SQL Server Management Studio 2012 (TOOLS) to 2014 version, and leave my old 2012 already installed database engine version?
Yes, you can.
But install SSMS 2014 as standalone (instead of trying to upgrade tools).
From SSMS 2014 SP1 release notes you can see that it vitally supported SQL Server 2012. See how many compatibility fixes for 2012 were delivered.
Generally I'd recommend to prefer latest release of SSMS 2016 which
works with all supported versions of SQL Server (SQL Server 2008 - SQL Server 2016)
(Besides that I tried to find similar statement for SSMS 2014 (there was one), but I couldn't.)
I'm using SSMS 2008 + SSMS 2016 side by side and they are running just fine. In similar way, I was using SSMS 2008 + SSMS 2014 before the upgrade.
You can download and install SQL Server Management Studio using the links provided in: Scott Hanselman's website
There are links to various SSMS versions (2012, 2014, for x86, x64), as well as links to various SQL-Server Express versions.
By the way, you can use the latest SSMS 2014 to manage your 2012 database.
You could simply install new SSMS 2014 version and leave the 2012 version installed ONLY IF they are all 32-bit or 64-bit. You cannot upgrade 32-bit 2012 to 64-bit 2014 and vice versa. Ideally you could use 2014 version SSMS to access databases created in 2012 before because of the compatible level allows you to do that, but it will raise another problem for restoring the databases since you cannot restore any backup files that backed up from old(2012) to (2014) because of the database version did not match.
SSMS is now a separate free product that works with all versions from 2008 and up. The current version is 16.5.3
For older versions:
There is no explicit block for SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005, but some features may not work properly.
You'll have to download the RC version if you want to connect to SQL Server vNext, eg to SQL Server on Linux
I currently have SQL server 2008 R2 Express installed for my QA/Dev environment on Amazon EC2 instance.
Now my database is growing beyond the 10GB limitation of Express edition, so am planning to buy SQL server 2014 Developer edition.
So can i upgrade my SQL Express 2008 R2 to SQL server 2014 Developer Edition, if yes what is the procedure?
Yes you can upgrade. Check this Upgrades from Earlier Versions to SQL Server 2014
Yes you can Upgrade Sql-Server 2008r2 to 2014 developer edition.
First of all restoring backup will not upgrade your database. So,
1) Microsoft SQL Server 2014 installation setup provide options to upgrade your database either from 2008 R2 or from 2012. This will preform all the process and provide information if your database is upgradeable or you required to make some changes to your old database. After that you can proceed to upgrade database from 2008 R2 to 2014.
My recommendation would be to install SQL Server 2014 instance and then backup and migrate database from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2014
2) There are other third party tools that will preform all the necessary processes and messaging before upgrade.
You can get complete installation details here :

Yes, you can upgrade it. You are not written your service pack of sqlserver. Here is the link to what and how to upgrade to Sqlserver2014.
Before doing this type of task always ready for rever, so take backup and restore any other pc.
This will give the whole up-gradation details

I currently have SQL Server 2008 R2 Express installed.
I like to upgrade to SQL Server 2012 Express.
I am using a 64 bit system (Windows 7 Home Premium).
Is there a wizard that can do the upgrade? I checked a few places on the web but was not sure which option to choose.
Thank you in advance.
As documented, upgrade is supported from SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Express to SQL Server 2012 Express. Install the 2008 R2 SP1, and run installation of 2012 Express normally. It should pick up and offer an upgrade. Your operating system is also supported.
The SQL Server Installation Center (when you download the Express 2012 64) it give you an option to upgrade the SQL server 2005, 2008, 2008 R2 too) , it helps to fix issues when you backup and restore between servers, I also used "Windows Update" to update the existing MS-SQL-Express
I use SQL Server 2008 R2 as the database engine. With my MSDN subscription, I can get SQL Server 2012 for development use. Since I noticed some cool things in 2012 SSMS, my question is that if I only use 2012 SSMS and keep 2008 R2 as the database engine, will there be any difference in scripts' generation or any other effects?
Thanks.
UPDATE 1:
Oh yes, I saw this page: SQL Server Database Engine Backward Compatibility, but it is not exactly what I am looking for.
No, there should be no ill effects.
SSMS 2012 should generate scripts that are compatible with the database version that is being actively used.
Hello everyone i have got a project to migrate from SQLAnywhere 11 to any new relational databases for our ship crew web application. The reasons for migrating is cost and support issues.I will need to choose a database which is free and has all features as SQLAnywhere 11.0.
Here is the list of Questions i want to know about SQL Server 2008 R2 express.
Do we have any migration utility to move from SQL Anywhere 11 to SQL Server 2008 R2 express.
How easy is deployment of SQL Server 2008 R2 express from install shield MSI.
Alternative methods to migrate from SQLAnyhere 11 to SQL server 2008 R2 express.
Do management tools come free with express addition. I should be able to defragment and restore the database.
Thank you
There is a SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) for Sybase (v 5.1 was released just this week), but I am not familiar enough with SQL Anywhere to assure you whether, or how well, it works:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ssma/archive/2011/07/12/announcing-sql-server-migration-assistant-ssma-v-5-1.aspx
Deployment of SQL Server Express is relatively easy, but I haven't done any work recently incorporating this into a more complex installer.
If you use Express w/Tools or Express w/Advanced Services, they come with Management Studio Express. You can also download this separately:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=22985
Note that Management Studio Express is missing some of the SSMS functionality, such as managing agent, so if you have to manage other editions you may be better off investing $49 (or less, depending on vendor) into the developer edition, which comes with the full version of SSMS.
