I am trying to right align a control in a StatusStrip. How can I do that?
I don't see a property to set on ToolStripItem controls that specifies their physical alignment on the parent StatusStrip.
How do I get Messages drop down to be right aligned? http://i.friendfeed.com/ed90b205f64099687db30553daa79d075f280b90
Found it via MSDN forums almost immediately after posting :)
You can use a ToolStripLabel to pseudo right align controls by setting the Text property to string.Empty and setting the Spring property to true. This will cause it to fill all of the available space and push all the controls to the right of the ToolStripLabel over.
For me it took two simple steps:
Set MyRightIntendedToolStripItem.Alignment to Right
Set MyStatusStrip.LayoutStyle to HorizontalStackWithOverflow
As an added note this is due to the fact that in the Win32 API a cell is either fixed width or fills the remaining space -1
int statwidths[] = {100, -1};
SendMessage(hStatus, SB_SETPARTS, sizeof(statwidths)/sizeof(int), (LPARAM)statwidths);
SendMessage(hStatus, SB_SETTEXT, 0, (LPARAM)"Hi there :)");
If memory serves me correctly you can have only one fill cell (-1) per statusbar.
You could also add a third middle cell and give this the fill property to get a more concistent looking StatusBar. Consistent because Messages has an inset to its left right where you'd expect it. A bit like the mspaint shot found on the MSDN page for StatusBars
I like the creative appreach though :D
You can display the Button at the end of the StatusStrip by using the logic below.
Add a ToolstripLabel to the StatusStrip
Set text as string.Empty
Set Padding for the ToolstripLabel
For example:
this.toolStripStatusLabel1.Padding = new Padding((int)(this.Size.Width - 75), 0, 0, 0);
Keep a Toolstrip label , set Spring property as true and for label align text in BottomLeft
I found that you can set the StatusStrip Layout to HorizontalStackWithOverflow.
Then, for each control on the StatusStrip that you want on the right side, set the control Alignment to Right.
I like this better since you don't need any extra or dummy controls to align.
If you set a status strip label control’s Spring property to true, then that label takes up any space not used by other controls in the StatusStrip.
Set the RightToLeft tool strip property to True.

I wanted to align a button all the way to the right. Using the Location property alone didn't work since maximizing the window or changing its size will affect the button's position.
In the scenario above, I set the Anchor property to Top, Right.
I'm putting together a simple winforms app, which consists on 1 form and a textbox.
I want to have the textbox scale in width when the form is scaled by the user.
By default the textbox is a fixed width and anchored at the top & left. The form scales ok, but not the textbox.
If I apply left, top & right anchor to the textbox it only scales the textbox & form up and I can't shrink it.
Do I need to dynamically set the width of the textbox to that of the form?
I've been trying to recreate this for 5 minutes and it resizes fine for me, and I've only been able to find one set of combinations that reproduces the behavior you describe:
Is the textbox inside a panel with Autosize set to "true" and AutoSizeMode set to "grow only" perhaps? That's the only way I've been able to duplicate the behavior.
Here's a screenshot of the properties set this way. My textbox is also set to anchor at top, left, right. Again, this is the ONLY way I've been able to duplicate the behavior you're describing, so hopefully this helps.
I have a report which displays customer address in multiple labels.
My customers use windowed envelopes for mailing. I need the address labels position to be configurable.
Something like, I'll have a database table which stores the Top/Left position of each label per customer. Based on this table, I need to position the address labels on my report.
I thought, it is doable by expressions, but Location property doesn't provides ability to set an expression and make the label's top and left dynamic.
Anybody, any ideas, on how to achieve this?
As you mentioned, you cannot set an expression for location property. I want to do this before but it seems that there is no solution for this work.
Sorry for the duplicate post
I had the same problem as you did. I got around the problem by using an old HTML trick. It involves using a transparent.gif in an image. You put your image (linked to the gif), then put your label on top. Using a parameter, you can toggle which item to appear by setting an expression in the hidden property for both controls.
As stated by others, it isn't supported. However, here are two ugly work around possible for basic reporting.
Work around with padding.
You can't set formula on the label's location, but you can use padding option instead.
So you can set the label as wide as the report and as tall as the region.
Also, set the label's horizontal alignment to "Left" and Vertical alignment to "Top".
Then, add a formula in left and top paddings to offset the text.
You can also achieve a right aligned offsetted label by setting the Horizontal alignment to "right" and using right padding instead of the left one to offset the field from the right. With the same recipe, you can offset from the bottom by using "bottom" vertical alignment and bottom padding.
The ugly side:
This method will create a mess in the report designer as all dynamic label will overlap each other and take all the space over static label. Also, please note that with this method, you won't be able to do fancy stuff like adding borders around the text and hyperlinks.
Work around with sub report.
If the number of different positions for the label(s) are really low. You can create a subreport for each possibility and use a formula to display the right subreport for the right case. Sadly, this doesn't work for labels in the header as subreport aren't allowed there.
No solution, as it is not supported!!!
From MS online community support...
"As far as I know, the position of the textbox in the report is static not dynamic, so it will not shift to left."

I currently have a Textbox on a Windows Forms, and I need to dynamically add a PictureBox box control at the right of the Textbox.
I create the PictureBox programmatically and I when setting the location of the PictureBox, i'm setting like this:
pBox.Location = new Point(tbControl.Location.X + ctrl.Width, ctrl.Location.Y);
So i'm setting the picture box to be located at the X location of the textbox PLUS the width of the textbox. However, since the textbox has an anchor property set to right, its width increases to fill the space between itself and the form border.
Problem is, that even though the textbox's width is visually bigger than the actual value of Textbox.Width. the Width property is not taking into account the extra width of being anchored.
I already tried properties like Textbox.Bounds.Width, Textbox.ClientSize.Width, Textbox.DisplayRectangle.Width, etc. with no luck. All of those properties return the original Width of the control without taking into account the resized width due to the Anchor property.
Does anyone know how I can determine the real size of the textbox? Thank you
The Width property always tracks the current width of a control, whether it is anchored or not. However, the TextBox is going to grow when you make the container larger and that will make it overlap the PictureBox. You have to anchor the PB to the right as well.
These should be returning the adjusted size. Either you are referring to the wrong textbox, or you are doing the query before the size has actually changed.
I am creating a Windows Forms ListView, and set its SmallImageList to place an icon in the first column of each row. I have set the TextAlignment for the column header to "center", but the icons are left aligned - can anyone offer advice on how to center align these icons?
Thanks
I was able to achieve the desired effect by setting the ListViewItem's IndentCount.
On a .NET ListView, the contents of column 0 are always left-aligned. You cannot set the value of TextAlign to anything else. If you try, the .NET framework just ignores it.
