I recently bought a new Mac and did a time machine restore of my old mac & updated the xCode version to the latest version. After the move I have lost the ability to use Make and GCC; saying these commands are unavailable. I use Make and GCC to develop for homework assignments for classes that I later SCP up to a Linux box at school then run from there.
How do I get GCC and Make for Mac OS Lion? I've seen some articles on how to install via source via compiling but they automatically assume you have GCC installed, which I do not.
Please help!
gcc should be in /Developer/usr/bin/. Check there.
You have to download Xcode from the app store
You have to run the Install Xcode application
Within Xcode go to Preferences -> Downloads and click install for the command line tools
You'll find the tools at the usual place, for example /usr/bin/make.

You can access the App Store and download XCode. It's free. It will give you llvm (compiler), make and related tools.
Unfortunately justing updating the path (which I found not in any /Developer but actually in /Applications/Xcode.app) doesn't solve other issues like missing manpages. Apple has released a new developer download for command line developer tools. Either go directly to Apple's developer page, for find a little more info and the link here.

I should preface this by stating I'm working with Xcode on macOS Sierra 10.12.6.
I installed GDB with homebrew and it appeared to install fine until I tried to use it. In terminal it kept saying that it was not a valid command. (I'm new to C and was working with my professor. Even he was baffled when I tried to use it after downloading it in front of him). So later I tried to install it by creating the make file and still having problems. I then used homebrew again but to uninstall and reinstall, still having problems.
Now I'm at the point where I can't even run my C files when I use gcc to compile them. I simply get a statement that unable to open file. I've read someone suggest to sudo mv /usr/local /usr/_local and I'm notified that I don't have permission, even after entering in my password.
I've gotten every error when I try to remove all items belonging to gdb. I've gone as far as removing Xcode in hopes that I can do a fresh install of it all.
I'm at the point where I've begun looking into removing my macports entirely.
I'm looking for any advice into how I can try to start off from a clean slate. I need to use gdb on a project that is due and can't get this up and running. Please help talk me from a ledge!

I have used Sublime to create a simple Hello World file and it compiles and runs fine with gcc. So my project file has become corrupted somehow. At least I can calm down a bit. But I would still like to get this gdb issue figured out and install a fresh copy with everything old removed.

I don't know how to reinstall gdb on macOS, but be aware that gdb is broken on macOS Sierra as of now (at least debugging dynamic libraries), see Bug report.
So if you even get gdb correctly installed you can probably end up with nothing (gdb won't be able to debug what you want).
Try making your file executable using gcc -Wall -g $fileName.c -o $fileName. This will show all the errors that might exists. Secondly, if it doesn't work and you absolutely need to use gdb, using a VM of Linux(recommend Ubuntu if you're new to Linux or Mate) is a good alternative. You then have to just use sudo apt-get install gdb and even install gdb-dashboard git-hub gdb-dashboard if you want to do some serious debugging. That's the quickest fix that I can think of you are in a hurry. Btw good VMs are VirtualBox and Parallel Desktop(if you want to have access to your local files from the VM).
I'm trying to install a geocoder for a website I'm building. I'm using Geocoder because the query limit for the Google Maps API falls short of my needs. I installed all the gems required and have SQLite3. When I'm actually trying to install the geocoder gem (Geocoder::US) I get an error while running the make file.
I'm getting an error I cannot figure out. It mentions the error (in the title) then talks of an non-existent file (sqlite3ext.h). Here is the error:
I know this is vague but I've been working for 10+ hours trying to install this and have found little help online. Any advice on which direction to go would be appreciated.
This is from the project's Readme:
To build Geocoder::US, you will need gcc/g++, make, bash or equivalent,
the standard *NIX ‘unzip’ utility, and the SQLite 3 executable and
development files installed on your system.
It seems that you lack the SQLite3 development headers.
This is relevant:
NOTE: If you do not have /usr/include/sqlite3ext.h installed, then
your sqlite3 binaries are probably not configured to support dynamic
extension loading. If not, you must compile and install SQLite from
source, or rebuild your system packages. This is not believed to be a
problem on Debian/Ubuntu, but is known to be a problem with Red
Hat/CentOS.
Also they do not mention Windows. You should:
Ask them if someone uses it on Windows and if there are instructions for that.
Evaluate the thing on Linux, Debian/Ubuntu especially.
-fPiC is not your problem. As the log states, the compiled code is already position independent. The problem is, that the sqllite3ext.h is not in the compiler include path.
I am using Eclipse for a C project. I created a new Project by going to New->C project->Executable->Empty Project, Linux gcc toolchain.
When I add a new .c file, I get "program 'g++' not found in path".
How do I get rid of this? I'm not even using C++.
I had similar problem and it is solved by

Changing in -
Window -> Preferences -> C/C++ -> Build -> Settings -> Discovery -> CDT GCC Build in Complier Settings [Shared]

For posterity I'm going to post my own solution to this problem. None of the answers above or on related StackOverflow questions helped; most referred to menu entries that didn't exist, and the ones I could try did nothing. I searched other sites as well; there were about 6 different answers repeated many times, and none helped.
Short answer: I blew away the Eclipse install and replaced it. Then it worked. For me at least it wasn't a project or configuration option (at least not one I could get to from the GUI); something in the Eclipse program folder had gotten tweaked and only a new install could repair the problem.
I'm doing Android development using the "ADT" (Android Developer Tools) build of Eclipse. I did something to the configuration that made it start giving the above error (actually two errors, for gcc and g++ both). And I tried plenty of potential solutions (in addition to my own searching for options that might help) with no success.
Thing is, I didn't NEED gcc or g++ in the path. I'm doing Android development, and while both are used in the build process, I'm not using Eclipse to do the builds; I use the Android build system. And the C/C++ Build/Discovery options didn't even give me an option for setting paths for gcc or g++. Other answers I found elsewhere referenced menu entries that don't exist, and most seemed to be about helping people to use the normal C/C++ build within Eclipse, which I didn't need to do.
So I used this opportunity to download the latest ADT package from Google, and then I ran the new one, importing the existing project into a new workspace (just in case the old workspace was corrupted or otherwise part of the problem). No more annoying gcc/g++ error.
I got the same error while I was using "Eclipse IDE for C/C++ Developers."
Install Eclipse from Ubuntu Software Center and then download and install Eclipse CDT.
To install CDT, open Eclipse -> Help -> Install New Software -> Add -> Archieve...
Then give CDT path to there. That's all
I was able to fix the problem by selecting
project(right click in Project Explorer on your project)->properties->Tool Chain Editor
and switching the Current Toolchain: to Android GCC and Current Buolder: to Android Builder
I also had the same problem. I did not have this error running my program but after a adding, including different Api and paths , probably unintentionally some changes happened in my Path that I could not fix it.
I could fix this error by going to Properties and just restore default for all the Tabs.
I have install the C/C++ CDT Version of Eclipse.
After making a HelloWorld.c file and get the code in there I get an error of "Launch failed. Binary not found".
I found in google that my Eclipse miss the compiler and I install MinGW on my computer and add the path to env variables (tested it with "gcc -v" in cmd and succeded).
But poorly it get the same Launch Failed error - any ideas, what step I forgot?
Some things to check:
1.) MinGW tools are installed as well. Make sure you have the C compiler and the Make program
2.) Check your Environment variables. Make sure both the compiler and Make are on the path.
3.) Eclipse is a temperamental beast at times, don't lose heart :-)
4.) If you're looking for a good IDE (without care for ideological concerns), might be worth looking at Bloodshed C++ IDE and Visual C++ 2010 express (or whatever they call their free version).
5.) Check the options menu in Eclipse to make sure it's looking at the correct environment variables for finding the Path.
IMHO, the simplest setup for eclipse on windows these days is cygwin - it seems to have been updated more recently than mingw, and works better.
Go to http://www.cygwin.com/, download the installer, select the default directory of c:\cygwin. Select 'All users'.
When it offers a list of packages, select 'gcc', 'binutils' and 'make' under the 'devel' category.
Add c:\cygwin\bin to your windows environment PATH.
Make sure Eclipse knows where to find your gcc compiler. An easier way would be to use EasyEclipse until you are more comfortable with your dev env.
I needed to move from the MinGW gcc to the CygWin gcc - all the C++2011 works and others say it is a better option too. Download the CygWin binaries etc. and then open up Eclipse.
In project properties, C/C++ Build -> Environment and set the CYGWIN_HOME variable. This worked fine for me on Eclipse Kepler Windows 7 (64Bit)
I also put the cygwin bin directory at the front of my Windows PATH variable.

You can try installing wascana. It automatically set up GNU compiler for you on Windows.
How do I compile a .c file on my Mac?
You'll need to get a compiler. The easiest way is probably to install XCode development environment from the CDs/DVDs you got with your Mac, which will give you gcc.
Then you should be able compile it like
gcc -o mybinaryfile mysourcefile.c
You will need to install the Apple Developer Tools. Once you have done that, the easiest thing is to either use the Xcode IDE or use gcc, or nowadays better cc (the clang LLVM compiler), from the command line.
According to Apple's site, the latest version of Xcode (3.2.1) only runs on Snow Leopard (10.6) so if you have an earlier version of OS X you will need to use an older version of Xcode. Your Mac should have come with a Developer Tools DVD which will contain a version that should run on your system. Also, the Apple Developer Tools site still has older versions available for download. Xcode 3.1.4 should run on Leopard (10.5).

for 2017 !
1 - Just have updated Xcode on your machine as you normally do
2 - Open terminal and
$ xcode-select --install
it will perform a short install of a minute or two.
3 - Launch Xcode. "New" "Project" ... you have to choose "Command line tool"
Note - confusingly this is under the "macOS" tab.
Select "C" language on the next screen...
4- You'll be asked to save the project somewhere on your desktop. The name you give the project here is just the name of the folder that will hold the project. It does not have any importance in the actual software.
5 - You're golden! You can now enjoy c with Mac and Xcode.
You can use gcc, in Terminal, by doing gcc -c tat.c -o tst
however, it doesn't come installed by default. You have to install the XCode package from tour install disc or download from http://developer.apple.com

There are also gui-er ways to do it, without resorting to Xcode. I like TryC.
Mac OS X includes Developer Tools, a developing environment for making
Macintosh applications. However, if someone wants to study programming
using C, Xcode is too big and too complicated for beginners, to write
a small sample program. TryC is very suitable for beginners.
You don't need to launch a huge Xcode application, or type unfamiliar
commands in Terminal. Using TryC, you can write, compile and run a C,
C++ and Ruby program just like TextEdit. It's only available to
compile one source code file but it's enough for trying sample
programs.
Use the gcc compiler. This assumes that you have the developer tools installed.
STEP 1
Just check wheater your MacBook has the compiler or not using this command 👉🏻 clang --version in your command line interface. If the tool exists then you will be able to see the version like this
STEP 2
Next, go to the directory where your source code exists using CMD Interface, then run the command make "filename" without the .c extension.
STEP 3
The final command to run your source code after compiling it is ./filename without the .c extension.
This is how you can compile and run your program on the Macintosh system.
