Using Helper $time->niceShort with german settings in CakePHP 1.2 - cakephp

I want to use the CakePHP Helper "time" and his method niceShort to transform a date into a nice, easy to read one. Instead of the english default transformation I want to use a localized version (in my case: "german") but I don't know where to set this. How can I localize this method?
echo $time->niceShort($comment['created']);

I don't think cake handles date localization very well you might need to use $time->format() see http://cakeqs.org/eng/questions/view/localizing_time_helper and this ticket http://cakephp.lighthouseapp.com/projects/42648/tickets/638-time-helper-i18n

If you can successfully set localization parameters, niceShort finds right month/day names.
Regarding to CakePHP docs change these:
$this->Session->write('Config.language', 'ger')
Configure::write('Config.language', 'ger');
setlocale(LC_TIME, 'de_DE.utf8','de_DE','de_DE','deu_deu');

How can I download a PDF file from a form using UI designer?? Bonita

The thing is I have found how upload a document and after that downolad it. But I just want to download it. I want to do it using the UI designer but I dont know how to do it.
Thanks :)
I dont know which tool are you using to design your UI, anyway this is concerning functionality, not design. In that point, i need to know wich language do you want (or can) use. For example, in PHP, it's very simple, you can make something like:
(create php file) downloadpdf.php
1st: (if you want to generate pdf "on the fly":
<?php
function download($foo){
content headers (type, force-download, etc)
database select to get data or harcode it.
echo data
}
?>
and call this function with some id to select from database or something (ignore if you want to hardcode it)
Other option to download a file, if it's stored on server is making a link to this file (statically or dyamically). If you wanna take control to file downloads, check this post:
http://www.media-division.com/the-right-way-to-handle-file-downloads-in-php/
I don't mean that it can be done with UI designer tools, and it's not concerned if it's from a form or not.
Cheers!
You should create link and variable which type is javascript expression. On Variable value write
return "/bonita/portal/" + $data.context.mainDoc_ref.url;
On link URL write your variable and to text
Download: {{context.mainDoc_ref.fileName}}
Here you can find excellent example for this case

Is possible to change pagination url names in cakephp?

Is possible to change pagination url names in cakephp?
For example:
example.com/tests/act/page:2/sort:title/direction:desc
to:
example.com/tests/act/pg:2/link:title/orderby:-date
Thank you all. But I am beginner in cakephp and pleased to see an example.
I read the documentation. but there is nothing about things I want.
Maybe I can translate those parameters and give to the Paginator class. but how?
Yes. Use routing. http://book.cakephp.org/2.0/en/development/routing.html
Just create a rewrite rule for it.
Pagination Works with named parameters, and there is not a simple way to rename them. You will need to modify the PaginatorComponent and PaginatorHelper to modify the parameters of the pagination.

cakephp how to check variable content and all function included?

sorry i was new here so this problem maybe simple.
anyone knows how to check variable content?
like xx($a);
then page shows all relate information about $a. Is CakePHP allowed to do that?
i setup a kit on my cakephp
You might be looking for either var_dump() or print_r()
You can use PHP built-in functions like
var_dump() - displays structured information about variable
print_r() - the same, but preformatted with some differences
get_defined_vars() - returns array with all defined variables
Or use true CakePHP-way
Debugger::dump() - It will print out all properties and methods (if any) of the supplied variable
For more convenience you may use CakePHP Debug Kit plugin, which provides nice toolbar and some useful tools for your purpose.

Multiple phrases per language in cakephp

I am creating a website using CakePHP that requires translation not only into multiple languages but also multiple phrases per language depending on the type of the logged in user. This will allow the same functionality but with more formal or more friendly language without duplication.
As a very simple example:
Type 1: "Customer", "purchase","shopping cart"
Type 2: "Client", "buy", "basket"
Type 3: "User", "order","invoice"
Each of these types would be available in multiple languages.
I've got the standard localization working in CakePHP (one of the reasons I chose it!) and have the appropriate default.po files in the /Locale/[lang]/LC_MESSAGES/ directory and all is working fine there (thank you to the user who noted on this site that ger needed to be deu to work ;) ).
Before I get too far into the app I'd like to add the phrasing so I can set e.g. the language as French and phrasing as type2. If I was doing this outside of a framework I'd have a matrix look-up to find the correct string based on language and phrase keys but am unsure of how to do this within CakePHP's localization.
Currently I'm using the standard __([string]) convention but as this is early in the development cycle it would be trivial to change if necessary.
I was considering using __d([phrase],[string]) but can't see how to set this without creating my app as a plugin and then I'm back to the same problem with /Locale/
I have been unable to find any example of this in my searches on SO or the cakePHP community sites so would be grateful for any suggestions.
Is there a standard way to do this within cakePHP? if not, what would be a good "best practice" way to implement this?
Edit - following the answer below here's how it was implemented:
in /app/Locale/[lang]/LC_MESSAGES/ I created a new .po files with the new phrasing in them as phrase1.po, phrase2.po etc.
Where I set the language I also set the phrasing where the phrase file matches the name of the po file:
Configure::write('Config.language', 'deu');
Configure::write('App.langDomain', 'phrase1');
and all strings were wrapped with:
__d(Configure::read('App.langDomain', 'string')
And it just works.
Use __d() like this:
__d(Configure::read('App.langDomain'), 'Some string');
In bootstrap.php check the conditions and set App.langDomain based on whatever you need.
__d() has nothing to do with plugins, you can use it everywhere.
And alternative would be to wrap your translations with a custom method, something like
__dd(Configure::read('App.langDomain'), array('foo' => __('String1', 'bar' => __('String2'));
The array is an array of langDomain => stringForThatDomain mappings. Your __dd() method would take the one that is passed in the first argument.

cakephp and get requests

How does cakephp handle a get request? For instance, how would it handle a request like this...
http://us.mc01g.mail.yahoo.com/mc/welcome?.gx=1&.rand=9553121_pg=showFolder&fid=Inbox&order=down&tt=1732&pSize=20&.rand=425311406&.jsrand=3
Would "mc" be the controller and "welcome" be the action?
How is the rest of the information handled?
Also note that you could use named parameters as of Cake 1.2. Named parameters are in key:value order, so the url http://somesite.com/controller/action/key1:value1/key2:value2 would give a a $this->params['named'] array( 'key1' => 'value1', 'key2' => 'value2' ) from within any controller.
If you use a CNN.com style GET request (http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/books/04/27/ayn.rand.atlas.shrugged/index.html), the parameters are in order of appearance (2009, SHOWBIZ, books, etc.) in the $this->params['pass'] array, indexed starting at 0.
I strongly recommend named paramters, as you can later add features by passing get params, without having to worry about the order. I believe you can also change the named parameter separation key (by default, it's ':').
So it's a slightly different paradigm than the "traditional" GET parameters (page.php?key1=value1&key2=value2). However, you could easily add some logic in the application to automatically parse traditional parameters into an array by tying into how the application parses requests.
CakePHP uses routes to determine this. By default, the routes work as you described. The remainder after the '?' is the querystring and it can be found in $this->params['url'] in the controller, parsed into an associative array.
Since I found this while searching for it, even though it's a little old.
$this->params['url']
holds GET information.
I have tested but it does work. The page in the Cakephp book for it is this link under the 'url' section. It even gives an example very similar to the one in the original question here. This also works in CakePHP 1.3 which is what I'm running.
It doesn't really use the get in the typical since.
if it was passed that long crazy string, nothing would happen. It expects data in this format: site.com/controller/action/var1/var2/var....
Can someone clarify the correct answer? It appears to me that spoulson's and SeanDowney's statements are contradicting each other?
Would someone be able to use the newest version of CakePHP and get the following url to work:
http://www.domain.com/index.php/oauth/authorize?oauth_version=1.0&oauth_nonce=c255c8fdd41bd3096e0c3bf0172b7b5a&oauth_timestamp=1249169700&oauth_consumer_key=8a001709e6552888230f88013f23d5d004a7445d0&oauth_signature_method=HMAC-SHA1&oauth_signature=0bj5O1M67vCuvpbkXsh7CqMOzD0%3D
oauth being the controller and authorize being a method AS WELL as it being able to accept the GET request at the end?
