Does anyone know when is SQL Server 2016 going to become available for download via MSDN? I thought it was today. As I type we still only have RC3 on there.
SQL Server 2016 released on MSDN:
SQL Server 2016 Database engine & core features (MSDN)
SQL Server Management Studio 2016
SQL Server Data Tools 2016 (June 2016)
The new download of sql 2016 management studio is an august release, you can find it here:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt238290.aspx
When you download this installer, you can see Releaswe 16.3 in the set up. I came to this question because if you install the previous release of the management studio(the one in the accepted answer) you will get an error.

I've installed SQL Server 2016 Developer Edition, because Microsoft states:
SSDT database projects in Visual Studio 2017 currently support up to SQL Server 2016. Support for SQL Server 2017 will be coming soon in a Visual Studio 2017 update.
My question is: Should I install exclusively SSMS 2016 or SQL Server Management Studio 17.1 is compatible with SQL Server 2016 Developer Edition as well ?
Thank you #scsimon for giving me an air of confidence.
I've installed SSMS 2017.1. It's compatible with SQL Server 2016, it works like a charm and, to be honest, it is much faster then SSMS 2016.
I am using locally the MS SQL Server Management Studio 2012 with SQL server 2012 database engine.
I have the following question:
Can I upgrade ONLY the SQL Server Management Studio 2012 (TOOLS) to 2014 version, and leave my old 2012 already installed database engine version?
Yes, you can.
But install SSMS 2014 as standalone (instead of trying to upgrade tools).
From SSMS 2014 SP1 release notes you can see that it vitally supported SQL Server 2012. See how many compatibility fixes for 2012 were delivered.
Generally I'd recommend to prefer latest release of SSMS 2016 which
works with all supported versions of SQL Server (SQL Server 2008 - SQL Server 2016)
(Besides that I tried to find similar statement for SSMS 2014 (there was one), but I couldn't.)
I'm using SSMS 2008 + SSMS 2016 side by side and they are running just fine. In similar way, I was using SSMS 2008 + SSMS 2014 before the upgrade.
You can download and install SQL Server Management Studio using the links provided in: Scott Hanselman's website
There are links to various SSMS versions (2012, 2014, for x86, x64), as well as links to various SQL-Server Express versions.
By the way, you can use the latest SSMS 2014 to manage your 2012 database.
You could simply install new SSMS 2014 version and leave the 2012 version installed ONLY IF they are all 32-bit or 64-bit. You cannot upgrade 32-bit 2012 to 64-bit 2014 and vice versa. Ideally you could use 2014 version SSMS to access databases created in 2012 before because of the compatible level allows you to do that, but it will raise another problem for restoring the databases since you cannot restore any backup files that backed up from old(2012) to (2014) because of the database version did not match.
SSMS is now a separate free product that works with all versions from 2008 and up. The current version is 16.5.3
For older versions:
There is no explicit block for SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005, but some features may not work properly.
You'll have to download the RC version if you want to connect to SQL Server vNext, eg to SQL Server on Linux
Recently upgraded to SQL server 2014 from SQL 2008 R2 and SQL server object explorer in Visual Studio 2010 professional is no longer recognising my 2014 database.
When trying to add a database I get this error
"Incompatible SQL Server version found"
MSDN blog about SSDT
I tried installing SSDT 2014 for VS 2012 hoping that VS 2010 problem will get some how resolved, but not to avail.
The normal server explorer is able to connect to the SQL2014 instance, but there are a lot of stored procedures and the interface is a bit slow.
The blog suggests to upgrade to VS 2012 or later version.
But is there any way to stay in VS 2010 and access SQL 2014 with SQL server object explorer.
Short answer: I think you will need to switch to a newer version of Visual Studio
Long answer:
This announcement promotes an update for VS 2012 & 2013 for a new version of SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) compatible with SQL Server 2014: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ssdt/archive/2014/03/25/sql-server-data-tools-for-sql-server-2014-is-available.aspx
This link states that with the release of VS 2013, they will no longer be updating VS 2010: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ssdt/archive/2014/01/30/ssdt-and-visual-studio-versions.aspx
From those MSDN links, my conclusion is that you'll need to get a newer version in order for SQL Server 2014 to play nicely with Visual Studio (I would love to be contradicted on this though!).
I downloaded MS SQL Server 2014 Enterprise Edition from MSDN. I want to do a server backend in C# and MS SQL, but the problem is, whenever I want to do something with DB in Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate it just tells me this
===================================
An incompatible SQL Server version was detected. (Microsoft.VisualStudio.Data.Tools.SqlEditor)
------------------------------
Program Location:
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Data.Tools.SqlEditor.DataModel.SqlConnectionStrategy.ValidateConnectionForEditor(UIConnectionInfo ci, IServerType server)
at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.ConnectionDlg.Connector.ConnectionThreadUser()
Honestly, I don't know what is going on, or why tells me that VS is incompatible with SQL server.
You should update SSDT to 2014, you can download it here:http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data/hh297027
Read more about support for SQL Server 2014 on this blog: SQL Server Data Tools for SQL Server 2014 is available
From the post:
For Visual Studio 2013 download check the Visual Studio update channel
(Tools –> Extensions and Updates –> Updates) for this update.
Hope this helps
I'm guessing that your VS2013 isn't fully updated and that you need to update the database tooling component (SSDT) for SQL2014. I posted an answer on this a couple of days ago with some instructions.
Look at the Extensions and Updates in VS2013 and there should be an update available for SQL Server Data Tools.
SSDT didn't have support for SQL Server 2014 until a release in Oct2013.
Update your SSDT here
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-au/data/tools.aspx
Until late January only SQL Server 2014 CTP was available (Community Technology Preview) and not as a RTM; which was not supported by tools like Visual Studio.
But now new Data tools are available, you can download the same and upgrade to it.
Get it from here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data/hh297027
Trying to install TFS 2013 using Microsoft SQL Server 2014 - 12.0.2000.8 (X64), not CTP. But I get error...
TF255146: Team Foundation Server requires SQL Server 2012 SP1 (11.00.3000) or greater. The SQL Server instance XXX you supplied is version 12.0.2000.8.
Has anyone experienced it? Microsoft documentation clearly states SQL 2014 is supported. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yes, this is correct, SQL Server 2014 is supported, but only with TFS 2013 Update 2, which was released a couple of days ago.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bharry/archive/2014/04/02/tfs-2013-2-update-2-released.aspx
Also, If you do install TFS 2013.3 (Update 2) with SQLServer 2014 There is a nasty performance issue with all of the work item functionality in the web access. Microsoft has not put a fix out yet . There is a document with a workaround , but its difficult to find ; the way its written it only addresses "Upgrades".
