Need help on a sql query to get data from multiple tables - sql-server

I have a couple of tables that have data in them that I am looking to get information from. Here is the rundown....In table 1 I have bunch of columns that I am pulling data from, one of the columns is a user ID (which is a number)that was the last userID to modify a record. In table 2 I want to pull in the name of that user based on the ID that is pulled from the other table (this table has both the userID and the username).
so my final query would have the columns in table 1 as well as the username from table 2 to show that was the user to last edit the record. I assume this has to be done in a nested select statement but for the life of me I cannot come up with the correct syntax.
Can anyone help me out?

Yes, you need a very basic join that link both tables together.
Select t1.UserID,
t2.UserName
FROM table1 t1 INNER JOIN
table2 t2 ON t1.userid=t2.userid

select t1.*, t2.{username} from table1 as t1
join table2 as t2 on t1.{userId}=t2.{userid};
change {username} with the actual column name of user
similarly {userId} with appropriate column name in tables.

How to use INSERT INTO with a LEFT JOIN?

I would appreciate if someone could help out.
There are two tables that I need to combine. So far I have been doing this every time.
SELECT * INTO TABLE_3
FROM TABLE_1 LEFT JOIN TABLE_2
ON TABLE_1.[DATE] = TABLE_2.[DATE1]
However, I would like to skip the part of creating a new table and insert the columns I need directly into the existing table.
I tried doing this,
INSERT INTO [TABLE_1] (USD,EUR,RUR)
SELECT USD,EUR,RUR
FROM TABLE_1 AS T1 LEFT JOIN TABLE_2 AS T2
ON T1.[DATE] = T2.[DATE1]
but got an error saying that my column names are ambiguous
I use SQL server 2014.
Instead of giving the column name directly, please specify the alias name to say from which table the column should take. May be here both tables having same column the you are trying to select. You should specify the exact table
INSERT INTO [TABLE_1] (USD,EUR,RUR)
SELECT [T1/T2].USD,[T1/T2].EUR,[T1/T2].RUR
FROM TABLE_1 AS T1 LEFT JOIN TABLE_2 AS T2
ON T1.[DATE] = T2.[DATE1]
Either you can specify T1 or T2 as per your business logic. Please rewrite the query as mentioned here. This will solve the problem. Please try this.

SQL: Building hierarchies and nesting queries on the same table

I am trying to build hierarchies by nesting queries on the same table in MS SQL Server 2014.
To give an example of what I am trying to achieve:
I have a table 'employees' whith the following columns:
[ID],[First Name],[Last Name],[ReportsTo]
{1},{John},{Doe},{2}
{2},{Mary},{Miller},{NULL}
I am trying to build a statement, where I join the employees table with itself and where I build a hierarchy with the boss on top.
Expected Result:
[Employee],[Boss]
{Miller,Mary},{NULL}
{Doe, John},{Miller,Mary}
I apologize, if this is a stupid question, but I fail to create a working nested query.
Could you please help me with that?

Based on the intended results, it looks like what you essentially want is a list of employees. So let's start with that:
SELECT LastName, FirstName, ReportsTo FROM Employees
This gives you the list, so you now have the objects you're looking for. But you need to fill out more data. You want to follow ReportsTo and show data from the record to which that points as well. This would be done exactly as it would if the foreign key pointed to a different table. (The only difference from being the same table is that you must use table aliases in the query, since you're including the same table twice.)
So let's start by joining the table:
SELECT e.LastName, e.FirstName, e.ReportsTo
FROM Employees e
LEFT OUTER JOIN Employees b on e.ReportsTo = b.ID
The results should still be the same, but now you have more data to select from. So you can add the new columns to the SELECT clause:
SELECT
e.LastName AS EmployeeLastName,
e.FirstName AS EmployeeFirstName,
b.LastName AS BossLastName,
b.FirstName AS BossFirstName
FROM Employees e
LEFT OUTER JOIN Employees b on e.ReportsTo = b.ID
It's a join like any other, it just happens to be a join to the same table.

TSQL - Loop over column to query other table

I'm stuck with the following task:
via Excel the user types in an ID then clicks a button (macro) to trigger SP or function
this ID usually "returns" more than one row
from this result I need the values of a single column (LookupNumber) in order to use those values to query or join another view. Looping required?
as a result I want to join the initial ID request table with the result of the other queried table.
In below image, the first table holds the ID the user wants to search.
The second table should be queried by the LookupNumber values that were retrieved from table A.
The third table shows the desired output:
The problem I have is how do I loop (if needed) through the LookupNumber once the search ID has been passed? I don't know what methods I should use for this task.
Because sqlfiddle doesn't seem to work, I put the tables from above screenshot in this link
Hopefully you can give me some ideas how to solve this.
Something like this should work:
select t1.*, t2.*

SQL Joining journal tables to user tables

I have a MSSQL database with 3 tables: Journals, Customers, and UserAccounts.
I'm trying to query Journals for transactions per account manager. This table has a customer ID column that links to Customers.
The Customers table has a ACC_Manager column that links to UserAccounts via UserID.
Inside the UserAcounts table are first and last name columns.
So it would be
Select
Journal.amount,
Customer.name,
UserAccounts.first
From
Tables
where
Journal.ACC_manager = 'Matt'
I'm having issues joining the tables so I can query using UserAccounts.first. Could anybody help? Thanks
Try the following. I didn't get exact column names so don't just use this code without modifying it a bit to suit your specific needs:
SELECT
j.amount,
c.name,
u.first
FROM
Journals j
JOIN Customers c ON
c.customerID = j.customerID -- Exact column names?
JOIN UserAccounts u ON
u.UserID = c.ACC_Manager
WHERE
u.first = 'Matt'
You may also need to use LEFT JOIN as opposed to JOIN. Read up on JOINs to be sure.

UPDATE query from OUTER JOINed tables or derived tables

Is there any way in MS-Access to update a table where the data is coming from an outer joined dataset or a derived table? I know how to do it in MSSQL, but in Access I always receive an "Operation must use updateable query" error. The table being updated is updateable, the source data is not. After reading up on the error, Microsoft tells me that the error is caused when the query would violate referential integrity. I can assure this dataset will not. This limitation is crippling when trying to update large datasets. I also read that this can supposedly be remedied by enabling cascading updates. If this relationship between my tables is defined in the query only, is this a possibility? So far writing the dataset to a temp table and then inner joining that to the update table is my only solution; that is incredibly clunky. I would like to do something along the lines of this:
UPDATE Table1
LEFT JOIN Table2 ON Table1.Field1=Table2.Field1
WHERE Table2.Field1 IS Null
SET Table1.Field1= Table2.Field2
or
UPDATE Table1 INNER JOIN
(
SELECT Field1, Field2
FROM Table2, Table3

) AS T2 ON Table1.Field1=T2.Field1
SET Table1.Field1= T2.Field2
Update Queries are very problematic in Access as you've been finding out.
The temp table idea is sometimes your only option.
Sometimes using the DISTINCTROW declaration solves the problem (Query Properties -> Unique Records to 'Yes'), and is worth trying.
Another thing to try would be to use Aliases on your tables, this seems to help out the JET engine as well.
UPDATE Table3
INNER JOIN
(Table1 INNER JOIN Table2 ON Table1.uid = Table2.uid)
ON
(Table3.uid = Table2.uid)
AND
(Table3.uid = Table1.uid)
SET
Table2.field=NULL;
What I did is:
1. Created 3 tables
2. Establish relationships between them
3. And used the query builder to update a field in Table2.
There seems to be a problem in the query logic. In your first example, you LEFT JOIN to Table2 on Field1, but then have
Table2.Field1 IS NULL
in the WHERE clause. So, this limits you to records where no JOIN could be made. But then you try and update Table 1 with data from Table2, despite there being no JOIN.
Perhaps you could explain what it is you are trying to do with this query?
