It was proven in 1936 that it is impossible in general to check if a process is in an infinite loop. That is a trick question.

I have experienced a strange problem when using assert in my program.
The program does not terminate even when I add a line of codeassert(false).
But the assert works when I write several lines of sample code. Anybody know why it happened?
If you have:
#define NDEBUG
this turns all assert's into nop's.
If you have differing behaviour, depending on the amount of code, then I guess you don't have NDEBUG defined and I would guess the compiler is simply compiling out the redundant code.
More details about environment are required, however, you give a definitive answer.

I've been going through the second edition of The C Programming Language and noticed that the book uses broken bars instead of pipes. Was this an old notation or are they interchangeable?
Its a font problem, most of the books show it as broken pipe even though it is the pipe operator
Boolean OR operator. It will set all bits true that are true in either of both values provided.
if ( a==0 || b==3 )
if any one of these is true the "if" statement will execute because it looks for true or
false values.

I am calling a shellcode using buffer overflow to spawn a root shell. Can somebody explain what this shellcode exactly does? I have tried different shellcodes to spawn a root shell, but this was the only one which worked for me.

On first glance, the code appears to do setuid(0), then setgid(0), then call sys_execve() on some values (which include ASCII codes for "/bin//sh").
Looks like this is pure "payload" code, since I don't see anything to ensure the code is executed on the first place (buffer overflow, stack smashing, etc.).

Can anyone tell me how to find (2^101100111000)%1000000007 in C?
There is a problem in which we have to convert a number into binary(1<=N<=600000) and find
2^(binary representation of N)modulo1000000007.
The values you are talking about will not fit into a standard long on any architecture, so you will have to use an arbitrary precision maths library such as GMP.
Hmm, just read Zong's answer... he's pointing to a more efficient method... haven't finished reading through the article but it looks like the better way to go...
